This March, Housing Works proudly celebrated the 12th anniversary of The Undetectables, our groundbreaking program that empowers people living with HIV to achieve and maintain viral suppression. For more than a decade, The Undetectables has combined unwavering support, innovative treatment options, and a deep commitment to the Ending the Epidemic Initiative, proving that when care is rooted in dignity, community, and creativity, lives are transformed.
At Housing Works, thousands of clients have engaged with The Undetectables over the past 12 years. Today, roughly half of the HIV‑positive population at Housing Works remains actively enrolled, with over 90% achieving viral load suppression. This month, we spoke with Dr. Archie, the Medical Director at our East New York Health Center, about the importance of the Undetectables program.
We have seen really great outcomes with the Undetectables program. We’ve seen a jump of 20% [viral load suppression] difference between patients who are not in the Undetectables program and the ones who are.Dr. Archie Jao
These outcomes reflect the dedication of clients working closely with primary care teams and case managers to overcome barriers to medication adherence and take control of their health.
What makes The Undetectables unique is not only its results, but its approach. The program recognizes that many clients face structural and financial barriers to care, and meets them where they are.
Something as simple as taking your medications every day isn’t as straightforward as it seems, if patients are rewarded for that, it can go a long way.Dr. Archie Jao
The philosophy of centering support, incentives, and trust, has helped make viral suppression achievable and sustainable for thousands of New Yorkers.
Beyond Housing Works, The Undetectables has expanded through nine partner agencies across New York City, engaging thousands more people living with HIV and contributing to millions of dollars in incentives, countless hours of case management, and thousands of reduced viral loads citywide.
As we honor 12 years of progress, The Undetectables continues to stand as a symbol of who we are at Housing Works.
It sort of defines in a way who we are as an organization because we're willing to take those risks. We're willing to go above and beyond for our patients.Dr. Archie Jao
This anniversary is not just a celebration of longevity, but of possibility. An HIV‑free future is within reach when care is innovative, compassionate, and community‑driven.
